Web Design Notes

This class is designed to teach you what a web is, how to design a basic website, and how to use various web design and photo editing tools to create it. Our classroom at Jackson Hole High School has sufficient computers for all students. The computers have Front Page 2002, Dreamweaver, NVu (a freeware program) and Photoshop installed. All have internet access. Please confirm with the office or the instructor where the class will meet. Students are welcome to bring laptops, but there is no internet access for these computers.

Access to a computer outside the classroom will enhance your experience in this class.  You may wish to download & purchase Dreamweaver (trial download) or Microsoft Expression (60 day trial) (the new MS Web Editor).

Our goal is it learn the basic principles of web design and not to learn how to use any specific web editor in depth. We will look at several editors to find and use the common elements in them.

It would also be useful to have access to some form of graphics program for optimizing art for your site. Pretty much any graphics software that comes with a digital camera will have most of the tools you need. Class will include a brief introduction to Photoshop, which is used to make photos and other art ready for the web. Photoshop Elements 5, available at Staples for less than $100, is a good starter program.

Basic web design is not difficult, with a WYSIWYG ("What you see is What you get") editor like those listed above. Although we will have a brief introduction to the underlying coding for web pages, our focuss will not be on learning this coding. If you want to scare yourself a little, click on View, Source, on the Windows text bar above, and you will see what the coding for this page looks like.

During this class, we will cover most of the material in the outline, and all students will be required to complete a web site as a final project. It would be useful if you started to think about what topic you would like to cover in your website. You may consider a personal or family website, a small business website, or a site that addresses a hobby or interest. During the course, you will need to track down graphics and photos that you can use on your project, links to existing sites that are related to your topic, and some written material about your topic. You may wish to think about some of this, and we will discuss it in the first class.

I will be using this web page to communicate with you, including listing of required and optional texts and materials, development of resources and links (you can help me with this if you find something you would like to share), posting of a course outline, schedule, and assignments. Please check back frequently for updates.

Meanwhile, to make this course useful for you, I would like to know more about you, who you are, how you came to be in this class, and what you would like to get out of it. Please e-mail me at victoria@writehess.com. I would also like to know how much experience you have with surfing the web, Microsoft Word and Windows, and web design at any level.
