The elephants at Imiri are all semi-tame, orphaned elephants. The elephant keepers take them to a viewing area during the day, and back to an area where they are chained at night. And they are big! A few pictures:

Up close & personal.
This two-ton baby is just two years old. I got very close to it and snapped a picture (below). She decided that I was either playing, or just too close, and she swatted me gently with the side of her head. As I rolled on the ground and quickly out of her way (I didn't know she was at the end of her chain), I developed a new respect for these gentle giants.
